五、内容简介
The lecture discusses the philosophical scientistsCopernicus, Kepler, Galileo, Newton, and Boyle, and their colleagues, the philosophers Descartes, Leibniz, Hobbes, Locke, Hume, and Adam Smith, who were partly mathematicians, physicists, political scientists, psychologists, historians, and/or economists.Isaac Newton, the foremost physicist of his era, read philosophy and displayed a philosophical turn of mind in his scientific work. Adam Smith, the first modern economist, was primarily a philosopher. There was, in short, no sharp contrast between the multiple roles played by these leading thinkers. As Newton, Boyle, Descartes and Leibniz illustrated, there was no discontinuity between making contributions to physics and mathematics and making contributions to metaphysics and epistemology; nor, as Hume and Smith illustrated, was there was a discontinuity between making contributions to history and economics or, in Hume’s case, even to biology, and making contributions to moral, political, or social philosophy. The world-transforming advances of the 17th and 18th centuries in natural science, mathematics, politics, economics, and social organization were strongly influenced by the philosophers of this era.
