五、报告人简介

马驰骋博士，香港大学商学院经济学助理教授。2011年获香港科技大学社会科学哲学博士。2012年至2017年在山东大学经济学院先后担任经济学助理教授和副教授。研究领域为经济史和发展经济学，在Journal of Development Economics、Journal of Economic History等国际权威学术期刊发表多篇论文。研究课题先后获香港研究资助局和国家自然科学基金委等资助。

六、 报告摘要

Based on the historical context of the Jesuit mission to China between 1560 and 1820, this paper examines the role of knowledge diffusion in scientific production. To facilitate their China mission, the Jesuits introduced European sciences to Chinese cultural elites—the Confucian literati. This stimulated the literati toward scientific research. In places where the Jesuits diffused European sciences, the number of Chinese scientific works increased significantly. The finding questions the conventional wisdom that the Confucian literati of imperial China disparaged science, and demonstrates the importance of access to new knowledge in scientific progress.
